Bálint Karosi, prize-winning Hungarian organist, will present a recital of music from his native country, on Friday, October 17, at St. Cecilia Church, 18 Belvidere St., Boston. The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m.
Karosi's program will include music of Liszt, Antalffy-Zsiross and one of his own compositions. The recital will commemorate the 52nd anniversary of the Hungarian Revolution. The recital also begins the American Guild of Organists' presentation of Organ Spectacular, recitals and programs worldwide, October 17-19, to promote the pipe organ and its music. Throughout the 2008-2009 year the Guild of Organists is celebrating the International Year of the Organ.
Admission to the concert is free; donations will be received.
Bálint Karosi, won first prize in the 16th International Johann Sebastian Bach Competition, July 2008, held in Leipzig, Germany, the city where Bach composed and performed for the final two decades of his life. Founded in 1950 by the Bach-Archiv, this competition is among the most prestigious in the world. Karosi, 29, is the first American-based organist ever to win first prize, and with it the coveted title of "Bachpreistäger" ("Bach Prizeholder").
Born and raised in Budapest, Hungary, Karosi currently lives in Boston, where he is Music Director at the First Lutheran Church of Boston. Karosi came to America in 2003 to study at Oberlin after earning degrees in clarinet, composition, and organ at Budapest's Liszt Academy and the Geneva Conservatory.
